-
Laser hair removal is FDA approved for the permanent reduction of unwanted hair growth.
-
Hair reduction is achieved over the course of approximately 12-18 services. The number of services varies by person and area being treated.
-
After a completed series, you can expect to need a “maintenance” service every 6-12 months.
-
During each service, the laser will treat only the hairs that are in the active growth cycle – this does not mean all visible hair. This is why it takes a series of services to reach each different growth cycle.
-
Services should be performed every 4-6 weeks and it is VERY IMPORTANT that you are consistent in coming in for consecutive services in order to get the best results.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Laser Hair Removal?
Is Laser Hair Removal permanent?
-
Although laser hair removal effectively delays hair growth for long periods, it usually doesn’t result in permanent hair removal.
-
Multiple laser hair removal treatments are needed for initial hair removal.
-
Touch-up treatments are usually needed to maintain results.
Who is a good candidate for Laser Hair Removal?
-
Hair color and skin type influence the success of laser hair removal. The basic principle is that the pigment of the hair, but not the pigment of the skin, should absorb the light.
-
The laser should damage only the hair follicle while avoiding damage to the skin. Therefore, a contrast between hair and skin color — dark hair and light skin — results in the BEST outcomes.
-
However; advances in laser technology have made laser hair removal an option for people who have darker skin and can be successfully used on all skin types.
-
Laser hair removal is less effective, and not recommended, for hair colors that don’t absorb light well: gray, light red, blond and white.

Can I get Laser Hair Removal if I have tattoos?
You may receive Laser Hair Removal AROUND tattooed areas, but the skin where the actual tattoo is should NOT be treated with Laser Hair Removal.
Are there risks associated with Laser Hair Removal?
Risks of side effects vary with skin type, hair color, treatment plan and adherence to pre-treatment and post-treatment care. The most common side effects of laser hair removal include:
-
Skin irritation. Temporary discomfort, redness and swelling are possible after laser hair removal. Any signs and symptoms typically disappear within several hours.
-
Pigment changes. Laser hair removal might darken or lighten the affected skin. These changes might be temporary or permanent. Skin lightening primarily affects those who don’t avoid sun exposure before or after treatment and those who have darker skin.
Rarely, laser hair removal can cause blistering, crusting, scarring or other changes in skin texture. Other rare side effects include graying of treated hair or excessive hair growth around treated areas, particularly on darker skin.
Laser hair removal isn’t recommended for eyelids, eyebrows or surrounding areas, due to the possibility of severe eye injury.

Review your medical history, including medication use, history of skin disorders or scarring, and past hair removal procedures
-
Discuss risks, benefits and expectations, including what laser hair removal can and can’t do for you
-
Discuss a treatment plan and related costs
-
Discuss proper prep and post-care instructions
How do I prep for Laser Hair Removal?
Please follow the Pre-Treatment instructions below:
-
No oral antibiotics at least 10 days prior to service.
-
If you are having facial hair treated and are using Retin A or Renova, please discontinue use 72 hours prior to service.
-
If you have a history of cold sores or had a recent breakout, please notify the RN or esthetician.
-
Avoid direct sun exposure. A sun screen of SPF 30 or better should be used at least 3 weeks prior to the service.
-
Do not use tanning booths or self tanning creams for 4 weeks prior to service.
-
Shave the area to be treated the night before or morning of the procedure.
-
No depilatory creams, plucking, or waxing 2 weeks prior to the service.
-
Do not wear make-up, deodorant or use moisturizer on the area to be treated the morning of the procedure.
-
If possible, wear clothing that will allow access to the areas to be treated.
-
You may experience a slight vibration or heat on your teeth or dental work if being treated around the mouth area; this is normal. Please notify us if you have a tongue piercing or braces.
-
We are not able to treat over tattoos, so please inform us of any tattoos
What should I expect during the treatment?
-
For each treatment you’ll be given special goggles to wear to protect your eyes from the laser beam.
-
During the procedure one of LéhCär’s laser specialists will apply a cool gel on the area to be treated. This is used to protect your skin and lessen the risk of side effects.
-
In addition to the topical gel, the cooling device on the tip of the instrument is used to keep the skin cool during treatment.
-
Once the laser is ready to be activated, the laser specialist will press and hold the instrument to your skin using a continuous motion.
-
The laser beam will pass through your skin to the hair follicles. The intense heat from the laser beam damages the hair follicles, which inhibits hair growth.
-
You may feel some discomfort, such as a warm pinprick, at times. However; the procedure is virtually pain-free.
-
Treatment times vary depending on size. Typically, treatments range anywhere from 10 minutes to 1 hour.
What is after-care like?
Please follow the Post-Treatment instructions below:
-
After service the area may be red and there may be temporary localized swelling. The redness can last for up to a few hours. You may have the appearance of raised bumps where the hair follicles are, this is normal. Perifollicular edema is when the hair follicle swells. The treated hair (any hair in the active growth cycle at the time of service) will take approximately 2 to 3 weeks to fall out as the hair naturally works its way out of the skin.
-
In between services, shaving is acceptable. Do not tweeze, pluck, or wax the hair.
-
If redness or swelling occurs, ice packs or a bag of frozen peas over the affected area can be applied.
-
Avoid heat and hot water on the treated areas for 24 hours.
-
Avoid saunas, chlorine/pools, steam rooms, etc. for 24 hours.
-
Use mild soaps that do not contain ingredients that may irritate the area.
-
After showering, gently pat the area dry. Do not rub the area as it may be sensitive.
-
If irritation occurs, do not pick or scratch it.
-
Apply an antibiotic ointment to the area and notify the office if there is a reaction.
-
Apply at least an SPF of 30 and avoid direct sun exposure to the area treated for a minimum of 24-48 hours.
What kind of results should I expect?
-
Hairs do not fall out immediately, but you will shed them over a period of days to weeks. This may look like continued hair growth.
-
The repeated treatments are usually necessary because hair growth and loss naturally occur in a cycle, and laser treatment works best with hair follicles in the new-growth stage.
-
Results vary significantly and are difficult to predict. Most people experience hair removal that lasts several months, and it might last for years.
-
Laser hair removal doesn’t guarantee permanent hair removal. When hair regrows, it’s usually finer and lighter in color.
-
Maintenance laser treatments are standard for long-term hair reduction.
